In a news interview last week, a Presidential candidate said, “These are pivotal, perilous times.”

Regardless of ones political views, that statement seems to express the sentiments of many in our Nation and throughout the world. The apostle Paul warned perilous times would come. Hopefully Believers will see this as an opportunity to practice what we preach and be the channel by which hope is restored to the world as we stand confidently for the truth and live out before the world a message of rest and peace in the midst of uncertainty and chaos.

People want answers not promises. Could it be that “for such a time as this” the Church will rise to the challenge and be a voice that restores that hope? If we are to seize this moment the Church must be a courageous, covenant community of individuals who will not compromise conviction regardless of the cost. They will be grounded in faith and in the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ. Speaking the truth in love, they will seek to live peaceably with all men. They neither cower to those who ridicule and persecute them, nor will they present themselves as better than others. They will maintain a culture of honor and respect for one another. They will live justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with their God. They will look not for affirmation from men, but from God. They have a passion for God’s Presence and endeavor to abide in the secret place of the Most High. They know they are in the world but not of it.

Their songs of worship and praise are expressions of love and devotion to God, birthed of a personal relationship with Christ and bathed in an ever- increasing faith. In these perilous times, will you, your family, and your coworkers commit to being a part of this covenant community—a voice of hope to the world?

When one thinks of the term “church”, more often than not an edifice comes to mind. Church is thought of as a place where one goes to worship, to pray, and to hear a sermon. But that is not the Biblical understanding of church. Three metaphors are most often used to describe the church: a Building, a Bride and a Body. Writing to the Ephesians, the apostle Paul referred to the church as, “members of the household of God, being built into a holy temple, a dwelling place of God.” In the book of Revelation, John sees the church as a Bride being prepared for the arrival of her bridegroom, Jesus Christ. And in Corinthians the church is depicted as a Body having many members, each functioning interdependently of the other, but as one unit. The Head of the Body is Christ, and we are individual members.

Just as members of the natural body work together in harmony and in unity, so also as members of the Spiritual Body (the Church) we are to relate to each other in honor and in respect of the diversity that is in each member. Each member has a particular function, and no member is of more or of less significance than any other. Though there are ministries given to the church, they are given for the express purpose of equipping the members for the work of the ministry (Ephesians 4).

Every Christian is called with one calling. We are all disciples of the Lord. Some are ‘called’ to a specific ministry that will occupy them full time, and will therefore be their source of livelihood. Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 9:14, “Even so has the Lord ordained that they who preach the gospel should live from the gospel.” Some earn their livelihood in other ways, but “the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal” (1 Corinthians 12:7).

The world makes a distinction between secular work and religious work (and so might we without proper understanding). The Biblical point of view is that all work is Christian if there is a Christian doing it and if what is done glorifies God and demonstrates love for one’s neighbor. All work has dignity from God’s perspective, whether one is employed in an office, or department store, whether as a businessman or a homemaker. Your present work is dignified because you, as a Christian—a disciple of Christ—are in it and God has you there as His Ambassador to represent Him, your King.

When the Apostle Paul wrote his second letter to the church at Corinth and declared, “We are ambassadors for Christ…” He was not addressing a conference of pastors or elders; he was reminding every believer of their “calling” as followers of Jesus Christ. What the world needs now is for every believer to become a full-time disciple, witnessing and ministering by example. This is precisely why God has placed you where you are—to be an ambassador, whose mission and purpose is to see those with whom you come in contact, reconciled to Christ. May God empower you and give you wisdom, patience, grace and peace as you fulfill your calling. You ARE the church.

His birth was foretold by the prophets, proclaimed by the angels, feared by the Politicians, and rejected by the religious leaders of His day. He was born of a virgin in a cattle stall, laid in a feeding trough, and acknowledged as king by the wise men. It is significant to note that they did not see Him as one destined to be king, but as one possessing status as king from His birth. When reports of the birth of the “king of the Jews” (Matthew 2:2) reached Herod, He plotted to kill the potential rival, as well as many other innocent children in the effort. Scripture tells us he ordered all the male children in Bethlehem and in that entire region who were two years old or under to be killed (Matthew 2:16). However, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, “Arise, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word; for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him” (Matthew 2: 13).

What was it about this innocent Child that made Him such a threat to Herod? What prompted the Magi to recognize Him as King of the Jews and to worship Him—a tiny baby? What Child is this that evokes praise from the angels in Heaven when they announced His birth to the shepherds? What Child is this?

It may seem surprising that Herod could have felt so threatened by an infant; but he knew his position as king was tenuous. He gained and maintained his power through brute force and political manipulation and thus had little support from the common people around Jerusalem. The people were so discontented with him, that any opposition (even from an infant king) could spark a revolution.

In spite of Herod’s fear and his threats to kill the Child, God supernaturally intervened to preserve Christ’s life. The scripture tells us, “Jesus increased in wisdom and in statue, and in favor with God and man,” and, as He came to full statue, He went about doing good. He was the hope of the downtrodden, the lover of sinners, the healer of all manner of diseases—He gave sight to the blind, opened deaf ears, cast out demons, made the lame to walk, and raised the dead. He was, Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace. He was the Way, The Truth, and The Life. He was crucified to appease the wrath of God; was buried, and after three days rose victoriously from the grave conquering death and Hell. He appeared to His followers, ascended to the right hand of the throne of God, sent His Holy Spirit to be our comforter, our teacher, and our guide, and is alive for evermore and lives to make intercession for you and for me.

What Child is this whose birth we celebrate at this joyful season? He IS the great “I AM,” The Alpha and Omega, the Incarnate Son of God—our provider, protector, creator, defender and friend! Hallelujah! What a Savior!
